School Library Media Center and Learning Commons

Virginia L. Heard Elementary School Library Media Center (LMC) and Learning Commons (LC) provide students and staff with access to a wide range of resources, supporting research, literacy, and inquiry-based learning. The library program is guided by the Standards for the 21st Century Learner and promotes intellectual freedom by providing diverse and inclusive materials.

Library Mission and Access

The media center operates on a flexible schedule, allowing students and teachers to access books, technology, and collaborative learning spaces throughout the day. The Library Media Technology Specialist (LMTS) works closely with teachers to integrate library resources into classroom instruction, ensuring students develop skills in information literacy, critical thinking, and digital citizenship.

Collaborative Instruction and Student Learning

Library instruction is designed to:
• Support research and information problem-solving
• Develop critical thinking and literacy skills
• Foster effective reading, writing, and communication
• Teach students how to evaluate and use diverse sources
• Promote a love for reading and lifelong learning

Teachers and the LMTS collaborate to plan lessons that align with the curriculum, incorporating books, databases, and digital tools into student projects.

Technology and Digital Resources

The library provides access to:
• Research databases and e-books
• Multimedia and digital storytelling tools
• Chromebooks, tablets, and STEM technology
• Online learning platforms for inquiry-based projects
