The Georgia Department of Education offers STEM and STEAM certification to schools that implement high-quality, interdisciplinary instruction connected to real-world applications. This certification recognizes schools that integrate science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts into their curriculum to enhance student learning and problem-solving skills.

What is GaDOE STEM/STEAM Certification?

STEM and STEAM certification is awarded to schools that meet specific standards in curriculum, instructional practices, professional learning, community partnerships, and sustainability. Schools must demonstrate a commitment to:

• Establishing a clear vision for STEM and STEAM education that is evident in school culture and stakeholder engagement.
• Implementing interdisciplinary, project-based learning that connects to real-world challenges.
• Using process-based thinking models such as the Engineering Design Process, Design Thinking, or a school-created model.
• Providing non-traditional career exposure through partnerships with businesses, industry leaders, and post-secondary institutions.
• Integrating technology to enhance instruction and support student-led learning experiences.
• Encouraging student-centered instructional strategies that promote collaboration, critical thinking, and innovation.

The Path to Certification

Schools are evaluated based on a continuum of launching, advancing, executing, and excelling across five key areas.

Culture of STEM and STEAM

Schools must establish a strong vision and school-wide culture that supports STEM and STEAM education. Project-based learning must be integrated across disciplines, including fine arts for STEAM certification. A school-wide process for problem-solving, inquiry, and critical thinking is required.

Instructional Practices

Interdisciplinary instruction must occur regularly and include real-world applications. Students should participate in hands-on learning experiences through Makerspace, technology labs, and science labs. Investigative research and projects should be supported by local businesses and experts.

Professional Learning

Teachers and administrators must engage in ongoing professional development focused on STEM and STEAM instruction. Collaboration among educators, business partners, and the community is essential. STEAM-certified schools must also integrate arts-based instructional strategies.

Community Partnerships

Strong partnerships with businesses, post-secondary institutions, and industry leaders must be in place to support student learning. Schools should provide students with opportunities for career exploration, mentoring, and participation in STEM and STEAM competitions, exhibits, and leadership programs.

Sustainability

A STEM and STEAM Advisory Council should oversee continued program development and innovation. Schools must review student performance and instructional impact regularly and have a long-term plan to maintain a culture of inquiry and problem-solving.
