About Heard Elementary

Virginia L. Heard Elementary School was named in honor of the late Mrs. Virginia Lord Heard.  Mrs. Heard was a noted civic and community leader who was loved for her generous talents and interests in the boys and girls of Savannah.
Virginia L. Heard Elementary was constructed in 1957.  The original size and design of the building and campus was remodeled during the summer of 1993.  The school is located in the central part of the city of Savannah, and is one of 27 elementary schools in the Savannah-Chatham County School System.

The school has a present enrollment of 600+ students.  Students who attend the school come from diverse backgrounds and many are transported from different parts of the city and the county.

Virginia L. Heard School is proud of its many fine traditions and rich heritage and the important role it plays in the life and education of its students.

During the 2021-2022 school year Heard became the first elementary school to become STEAM certified in the Southeast Georgia.
